Our Pastors

Senior Pastor: David Mertz

David attended Carleton College in Minnesota for his B.A., Union Theological Seminary in NYC for his M.Div., and Luther Seminary in St. Paul for his D. Min. David worked in a law firm, as a fundraiser, as a hospital chaplain, and served churches in Minnesota, Texas, and New Jersey, and served at First UMC Westfield for seven years before being appointed to the Neshanic and Sergeantsville churches in July, 2018. He believes that our identity as Christians shapes how we live as neighbors. David is married to Nancy Duff, an ordained Presbyterian and professor of theological ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary. Associate Pastor: Marissa van der Valk

Marissa served on the staff at Bishop Janes UMC for 4 years in the capacity of youth director, office manager, and communications director, before being appointed to the Neshanic and Sergeantsville churches in July, 2018. Marissa was born and raised in California moving to New Jersey 6 years ago. Previous to moving to New Jersey, Marissa worked for 15 years as a molecular biologist at a pharmaceutical company in California. She holds degrees in Biological Sciences and Computer Information System from California Lutheran University. She completed her Master of Divinity degree at Drew Theological School in May 2019.
